Adjunct Instructor, Surgical Technology

Position Overview

Gateway Technical College invites applicants who are committed to higher education and to preparing students for successful careers in surgical technology.

Adjunct faculty are temporary, part-time instructors hired to provide instruction, student advising and student support. Courses are assigned based on departmental needs and are subject to student enrollment.

Instruction may take place in classroom, laboratory or clinical environments. This instructor reports to the Dean, School of Health.

What You Will Do

Plan and Deliver Instruction

• Plan and teach Surgical Technology courses that fulfill current curriculum goals and objectives.
• Prepare a course syllabus that includes course requirements, attendance expectations and grading criteria.
• Provide instruction in classroom, laboratory or clinical settings as assigned.
• Remain current in surgical technology practices, equipment, procedures and industry standards.
• Use appropriate assessment techniques to measure student progress toward course and program objectives.

Support Student Success

• Assess student performance and provide timely, constructive feedback.
• Identify students who need additional instruction to successfully complete course objectives.
• Provide additional instruction and academic support to students as needed.
• Promote safe, professional and ethical surgical technology practices.
• Maintain confidentiality regarding student and patient information.

Contribute to the College Community

• Participate in college, campus and department evaluation processes.
• Attend adjunct faculty meetings as scheduled.
• Collaborate constructively with faculty, staff and clinical partners.
• Promote the Surgical Technology program and the education and training it provides.
• Participate in efforts to recruit and retain students and market Gateway.
• Comply with college policies, procedures and department guidelines.

Minimum Qualifications

Candidates must meet one of the following qualification pathways:

Required Credential

All candidates must possess:

• A current credential in Surgical Technology through a national certification program accredited by the National Commission for Certifying Agencies (NCCA).

Skills, Knowledge and Abilities

• Current knowledge of operating room practices, surgical procedures and surgical technology standards.
• Ability to demonstrate technical skills and explain Surgical Technology concepts clearly.
• Ability to work effectively with students from diverse backgrounds and varying levels of experience.
• Effective verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills.
• Effective problem-solving and critical-thinking skills.
• A flexible schedule to accommodate day, evening and weekend students.

Conditions of Employment

• Employment is contingent upon an acceptable background check.
• Candidates must meet employment eligibility requirements for the United States.
• Candidates must maintain the Surgical Technology credential required for this position.
• Participation in competency-based professional development through the Faculty Quality Assurance System (FQAS) is required.
• Flexibility is required to accommodate day, evening and weekend students.
• Annual attendance at Gateway Technical College Adjunct Faculty In-Service is required.
• Gateway Technical College does not provide relocation assistance.
