Functions

Area of Responsibilities

*Patient Care - Demonstrate competency in patient care. Maintain patient's safe passage in and out of the clinic, and ancillary services. Greet, assess, and interview patients. Review present medications, allergy history, chief complaint, and brief interrogation of complaint. Update medication list and current problem list. Obtain past medical and surgical history, family history, social history, and vital signs. Anticipate needs of patients, and the care provider with whom I work. Prepare and assist patients for examination, treatment, or procedure by medical staff. Monitoring of patient during examination or procedure. Administer injections, perform phlebotomy and or lab testing, wound care, suture removal, etc., as directed by provider. Supply patients with medication samples as instructed by provider. Obtain referrals and pre-certifications as necessary. Act as a liaison between provider and patient. Explain medications, side effects, treatments, diets, diseases, and disease processes. Communicate with patients over the telephone, provide tests results, answer questions and respond to messages in a timely manner, and provide clear documentation of this communication in the patient's record. Maintain patient confidentiality.

*Teamwork -Works well with others and functions as a team player. Offers ideas and solutions for issues that affect the team and work area. Stocks and orders supplies as needed. Maintains patient care areas. Participates in the training and skills development of new medical assistants. Assists in other areas of the office as necessary.

*Safety -Maintains working knowledge of medical equipment and removes faulty equipment from use as necessary. Participates in safety programs.

*Development -Maintains and updates level of skill for pertinent medical assistant duties. Participates in continuing education. Participates in the development of new programs (ex: Process Improvement, Quality Initiatives).

*Customer Service -Participates in patient satisfaction initiatives. Demonstrates excellent customer service skills. Communicates effectively with patients and management regarding service recovery opportunities. Works together with other team members to achieve Office and System customer service goals.

*May be responsible for handling of medications to include: maintaining proper inventory on hand, ordering from approved distributor, and receiving medication orders from the distributor by timely checking-in of the medications to ensure proper storage and handling for the maintenance of the integrity and security of the medications. May be responsible for properly documenting the wastage of medications, monitoring and reporting the wastage. This includes the monitoring and proper disposal of expired medications. May be responsible for resolving and or reporting medication errors. May be responsible for the reconciliation of medication charges and credits.

*Functions as office clinical support as needed to include x-ray performance, rooming patients, facilitating medication fill and refill, responding to and completing EMR message tasks as necessary, performs room setup & procedure assist tasks, washes instruments, remains competent to run autoclave, irrigates ears, performs injections, among other pertinent clinical support tasks

*Perform audiology testing hearing tests including but not limited to audiograms, tympanograms, OAE's, among others. Performs allergy testing set up, SLL scope room set up, submits pathology cultures and completes corresponding paperwork, mixes sublingual drops as requested by providers

*Supports Audiologist with appropriate tasks such as cleaning hearing aids, replacing filters & drones, minor troubleshooting.

*Other duties as assigned.

PATIENT CENTERED MEDICAL HOME RELATED DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Access to care Triages patients who many need urgent or emergent care. Provider clinical advice by phone during office hours within designated time frame. Document clinical advice in the medical record. Provide written materials about accessing routine and urgent-care appointments outside regular business hours. Utilize and provides continuity of medical record information for care and advice when the office is not open. Provide timely clinical advice by phone when the office is not open, within designate time frame. Documents after hours' clinical advice in patient records. Asks patients about care obtained outside the practice. Assesses racial and ethnic diversity of its population. Provides interpretation or bilingual services to meet the language needs of its population. Participates in a structured communication process, i.e. huddles

Identify and Manage Patient Population: Collect and review clinical data i.e., problem list, allergies. BP, height and weight, tobacco use, current medications. Completes comprehensive health assessment. Provides input for three different preventive care services. Provides input for three chronic care services.

Plan and Manage Care: Conducts pre-visit preparations. Provides a written plan of care for the patient family. Assesses and addresses barriers when the patient has not met treatment goals. Identifies patients who may benefit from additional care management support. Reviews and reconciles medication with patient's families. Provides information about new prescriptions. Assesses understanding about medication and barriers to adherence. Documents over the counter medications, herbal therapies, supplements. Generated and transmits eligible prescription to pharmacies.

Provide Self-Care Support and Community Resources: Provides educational resources to assist with self-management support. Develops and documents self-management plans and goals in collaboration with th patient and family. Documents self-management abilities and provides tools to record self-care. Counsels patient's families to adopt healthy lifestyle.

Track and Coordinate Care: Tracks lab and imaging tests until results are available, flagging and following up on overdue results. Flags abnormal results, bringing them to the attention of clinician. Notifies patient's families of normal and abnormal lab and imaging test results. Follows up with inpatient facilities on newborn hearing and blood spot screening. Gives consultant or specialist the clinical reason for the referral and pertinent information. Consistently obtains patient discharge summaries from the hospital and other facilities.

Measure and Improve Performance: Participates in improved performance for three preventive care measures. Participates in improving performance for three chronic car measures. Participates in implementing and demonstrating continuous quality improvement.

Compliance Statement

Employee performs within the prescribed limits of Tanner Health System's Ethics and Compliance program. Is responsible to detect, observe, and report compliance variances to their immediate supervisor, the Compliance Officer, or the Hotline.

Required Knowledge & Skills

Education: High School Diploma or GED

Experience: Three months of related experience

Licenses and Certifications

*CERTIFIED MEDICAL ASSISTANT

*HEALTHCARE PROVIDER (CPR)

Supervision

*Occasionally uses assistance of a student to perform tasks.

Qualifications

*Certification through CPOP course by AAO-HNS strongly preferred or willingness to obtain within 3 months of hire date.

*Six months experience preferred.

*Must be certified as a Medical Assistant by the AAMA or a Registered Medical Assistant by the AMT. We will accept certification from NCCT, ARMA, AAH and NHA. MA or nursing school may be used as part of the experience required.

*Must possess the sense of discipline to work in accordance with accepted clinical standards.

*Must possess the cognitive ability to understand patients' medical records, physicians orders and medical orders to be communicated to patient, hospital, and or other physician.

*Must be capable of dealing tactfully and effectively with patients, family members, other employees, and physicians.

*Prior experience of performing x-rays and EKG preferred.

* NOTE: BLS within 90 days

Definitions

Responsible for rendering clinical care within the medical practice in support of and as directed by the physician. Will also have general responsibilities to assist in the day-to-day operation of this office to ensure quality patient care. Clinical care will include patient assessment, planning, intervention, and evaluation.
