Learn About a Day in the Life of a Medical Assistant:
Responsibilities
- The Medical Assistant provides superior patient care and performs administrative and delegated clinical tasks that support patients in a clinic-based environment as part of a care team led by the physician and/or advanced practice provider.
- Enters, maintains, and reports all medical history, medical coding, and files claims using an Electronic Medical Record (EMR).
- Patient visit support that may include: Greeting patients and escorting patient to exam room and/or taking patients’ vital signs and other applicable medical information to effectively support the reason for the patients visit and recommended treatment.
- Sterilizes and prepares medical instruments. Ensures patient exam rooms are disinfected, orderly, and ready for incoming patients. Provides patients with privacy, comfort, safety and hygiene.
- Assists in maintaining inventory and stocking supplies, instruments and equipment for all exam rooms.
- Maintains appropriate paperwork for inventory control and reviews orders received for completeness.
- Addresses and requests referrals and other insurance authorizations in addition to passing along patient information for prescription, x-ray or lab requisitions to necessary parties. This includes calls to pharmacies, hospitals, and labs.
Qualifications
Job Requirements:
- High school diploma or GED equivalent.
- Graduate from an accredited medical assistant/medical technologist school/program.
- Current national certification as a Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) or Registered Medical Assistant (RMA).
- Basic Electronic Medical Record (EMR) and Microsoft Office knowledge.
- BLS certification must be obtained within 14 days of hire or transfer into the role and prior to providing direct patient care.
Preferred Job Requirements:
- Associate’s degree.
- Prior experience in a clinic or hospital setting supporting patient care
