Job Summary: 

The Lead Cardiac Sonographer and Supervisor is responsible for overseeing the daily operations of cardiac testing while providing high-quality diagnostic cardiac sonography and clinical leadership. This role ensures efficient scheduling, optimal image quality, timely report turnaround, and adherence to established protocols, regulatory requirements, and accreditation standards. The position collaborates closely with cardiologists, nursing, and department leadership to support patient care, workflow optimization, and customer satisfaction.

The Lead Cardiac Sonographer and Supervisor also serves as a clinical resource and educator, providing training, coaching, and mentorship to staff, physicians, and student sonographers. Responsibilities include coordinating student clinical experiences, maintaining educational partnerships and documentation, monitoring quality metrics, supporting equipment maintenance, and assisting with quality improvement initiatives. The role promotes professionalism, teamwork, patient-centered care, and continuous improvement while supporting the Sr. Practice Manager with staffing coordination, operational problem-solving, and departmental effectiveness.

The position requires advanced technical expertise in cardiac sonography, demonstrated leadership abilities, and a commitment to maintaining a positive, collaborative, and inclusive environment.

Responsibilities

Essential Functions

• Is responsible for the daily operation of cardiac testing, and brings non-compliant issues immediately to the Sr Practice Manager.
• Develops schedules that meet the needs of the customers and the department. Makes necessary changes to staff schedules to meet the needs of customer appointment availability. Prioritizes requests based patient diagnosis.
• Regularly reviews protocols and procedures with Cardiologists and makes recommendations to the Sr Practice Manager for additions/changes/deletions.
• Assures that all echocardiogram images are of optimum diagnostic quality so that the Cardiologists can make an accurate interpretation of the images.
• Ensures reports are directed to appropriate Cardiologists for interpretation. Monitors report turnaround times for Cardiologists.
• Interacts with echo and EKG staff to improve work flow, patient communication and customer satisfaction.
• Takes appropriate measures to resolve customer issues and service recovery while keeping the Sr Practice Manager informed of any issues.
• Is responsible for training of physicians and staff with regards to echo PACS, acts as primary troubleshooter for system problems.
• Oversees the maintenance of echo equipment, effectively troubleshoots and reports problems to Clinical Engineering.
• Well informed regarding JCAHO guidelines. Monitors adherence.
• Assists Medical Director and Sr Practice Manager in obtaining and maintaining ICAEL accreditation.
• Works closely with Sr Practice manager to coordinate cardiologist’s availability when necessary.
• Works closely with nursing and OR staff to coordinate TEE’s when necessary.
• Schedules on site in-service education for echo staff
• Counsels staff on tardiness, absenteeism or other pertinent HR policies when necessary.
• Performs yearly evaluations for echo staff with the Sr Practice manager
• Introduces self and identifies patient using 2 forms of ID. Explains testing procedure.
• Reviews the medical history and directs the exam based on that information.
• Performs cardiac diagnostic imaging procedures to study the anatomy and hemodynamics of the heart, including two dimensional (2D) and doppler modalities.
• Performs online calculations in order to quantify cardiac parameters of function and hemodynamics.
• Is knowledgeable regarding the anatomy, hemodynamics, and physiology associated with the both the healthy and diseased heart.
• Is knowledgeable regarding cardiac arrhythmias and cardiac medications.
• Reports abnormal findings to Cardiologists. Takes steps to safeguard patients when abnormal results are identified.
• Reviews testing results with Cardiologists. Discusses cases and techniques used to obtain optimal images.
• Assists Cardiologists during transesophageal echocardiograms.
• Works together to complete assignments with departmental and other healthcare team members.
• Demonstrates the ability to work independently.
• Operate stress testing equipment when necessary.
• Performs 12 lead electrocardiograms when necessary.
• Manages the organization, administration, continuous review, planning, development, general effectiveness of the education program.
• Develop clinical learning objectives, rotation schedules, and educational experiences aligned with program requirements
• Utilizes a variety of training methodologies, techniques, concepts, learning tools and practices to ensure maximum effectiveness of the training program
• Coordinates student clinical experiences including the identification of shadowing or experiential visits, scheduling, developing partnerships, and maintaining all required documentation in coordination with HR
• Leads student recruitment and retention
• Serve as the primary liaison with affiliated education institutions
• Directly oversee students during live patient exams
• Identify learning needs and collaborated with leadership to develop individualized education plans.
• Provide day to day clinical guidance, coaching, and mentoring to student sonographers
• Monitors and tracks student progress and performance in accordance with any governing bodies. Maintains student attendance, grade, and discipline records as required by their program
• Is responsible for cleaning and disinfection of equipment including probes.
• Orders supplies as needed and appropriate.
• Promote best practices, professionalism, teamwork, and a culture of patient centered care
• Assist Sr Practice Manager with workflow optimization, staffing coordination, and operational problem solving
• Support implementation of new clinical protocols, technologies, and evidence based practices
• Assist with departmental quality assurance and quality improvement initiatives. Maintain compliance
• Monitor key quality metrics including image quality, report turnaround times, protocol adherence, repeat studies, and patient satisfaction
• Demonstrates the ability to work independently
• Performs other duties and locations as assigned.
• Completes all mandatory education requirements
• Complies with all company policies and procedures

Qualifications

Job Requirements Minimum Education

• Formal training from an accredited medical sonography program specializing in cardiac sonography.
• High School graduate or equivalent.

Required Licenses

• Credentialed by the ARDMS as Registered Diagnostic Cardiac Sonographer (RDCS) or as a Registered Cardiac Sonographer (RCS) through Cardiovascular Credentialing International.
• Current certification in BLS.

Required Skills

• Good computer, written and verbal skills.
• Exhibits leadership qualities, maintain a positive attitude and set an example for staff members to follow.

Required Experience 

• Must have a minimum of 3 years of technical experience.
• Experience with educating students
