Lead Certified Medical Assistant

Role Overview  

The Lead Certified Medical Assistant (Lead CMA) provides leadership, oversight, and daily operational support for the medical assistant team to ensure high‑quality, safety, and efficient clinical care. Working under the direction of the Quality Manager and in collaboration with nursing leadership, the Lead CMA supports clinical workflows, ensures adherence to clinical standards, and promotes excellence in patient care. This role includes staff supervision, training, quality monitoring, infection control oversight, and support of daily clinic operations. The Lead CMA must demonstrate strong clinical knowledge, professionalism, organizational skills, and the ability to guide and mentor team members. 

Areas of Accountability 

This position is directly accountable for the following key areas: 

1. Staff Supervision, Training & Competency Development 

• Provide daily supervision of Medical Assistants to ensure compliance with standards of care and clinical work plans. 

• Train MA staff on Avenue 360 clinical policies, procedures, protocols, and documentation requirements. 

• Train new and existing staff on paperwork responsibilities, including referrals and scanning. 

• Support the recruitment, retention, and onboarding of Medical Assistants. 

• Conduct regular performance reviews and ensure staff meet qualification and performance standards. 

• Provide coaching, feedback, and corrective actions as appropriate to support staff development. 

• Maintain knowledge of current trends and practices in the nursing and medical assistant professions. 

1. Clinical Quality, Safety & Compliance 

• Ensure compliance with Infection Control Policies and collaborate with leadership to maintain quality standards. 

• Collect, analyze, and interpret infection‑control data. 

• Ensure completion of monthly hand hygiene audits. 

• Notify appropriate authorities regarding reportable diseases as required. 

• Plan, implement, manage, and evaluate infection prevention and control activities. 

• Educate staff and patients on infection risks, prevention, transmission, and disease‑specific precautions. 

• Support and monitor compliance with Vaccine for Children (VFC) and Adult Safety Net (ASN) programs. 

• Assist in maintaining continuous Joint Commission readiness in collaboration with the Nurse Manager. 

1. Clinical Workflow, Care Support & Operational Efficiency 

• Oversee clinical care support and ensure efficient patient flow throughout the clinic. 

• Support provider‑CMA team huddles and ensure CMAs complete pre‑charting. 

• Review and reconcile clinic lab queues as needed. 

• Oversee clinic in‑baskets and assist with urgent clinical requests. 

• Monitor all clinical logs, including autoclave, diagnostic, emergency, and pathology logs. 

• Oversee ordering and management of supplies, medications, vaccines, and emergency kits. 

• Support MA staff on the floor by assisting with patient care as needed. 

• Provide guidance on clinical processes, documentation, and procedure‑related tasks. 

1. Data, Reporting & Quality Improvement 

• Assist with data mining and quality improvement projects as assigned. 

• Maintain accurate documentation and participate in quality assurance activities. 

• Provide feedback to the Regional Nurse Manager regarding staffing levels and clinical procedures. 

• Support the implementation of quality initiatives and ensure team compliance with standards. 

1. Communication, Collaboration & Leadership Support 

• Utilize a multidisciplinary approach to support coordinated care. 

• Collaborate closely with the CMA Supervisor, LVN team, and Regional Nurse Manager. 

• Communicate updates, expectations, and training needs to MA staff clearly and professionally. 

• Provide education and support as directed by the CMA Supervisor, LVN, or Regional Nurse Manager. 

• Demonstrate strong leadership and serve as a role model for professionalism and clinical excellence. 

1. Flexibility & Additional Responsibilities 

• Provide cross‑coverage to other clinics as needed. 

• Adapt to changing priorities and assist with tasks outside of routine responsibilities as needed. 

• Perform additional duties or special projects assigned to support organization operations.

Education, Licensure/Certification: 

• High school diploma or GED required. 

• Medical Assistant Certification required 

• BLS (Basic Life Support) Certification required. 

Experience, Skills/Abilities Related Requirements: 

• Bilingual proficiency in English and Spanish is preferred to support effective communication with patients, though candidates who are not bilingual are still encouraged to apply. 

• Experience working with patients, clients, or the public in a fast‑paced environment preferred. 

• Demonstrated competency in communication, problem‑solving, and maintaining professionalism under pressure. 

• Soft skills such as empathy, adaptability, teamwork, and a service‑oriented mindset. 

• Proficiency with electronic health records (EHR) systems, scheduling software, and basic office technology and software preferred. 

Continuing Education and Training Requirements: 

• Participates in all required training and continuing education as outlined by the organization, funding sources, and any applicable licensure requirements. 

• Maintains Medical Assistant Certification. 

• Maintain BLS (Basic Life Support) Certification
