Job Summary

Summary
The Phlebotomy Apprentice is an entry-level, work-and-learn role combining didactic instruction with supervised clinical training, with a primary focus on phlebotomy and specimen collection. This is a learning role first. The Phlebotomy Apprentice performs all clinical functions under the guidance of experienced educators and department leaders, using each supervised patient encounter as an opportunity to build confidence, refine technique, and develop the professional skills required for independent phlebotomy practice.

Competency is assessed formally and incrementally throughout the program, with the goal of preparing the Apprentice to sit for a nationally recognized phlebotomy board examination upon program completion. The Apprentice may not perform any clinical function independently until competency has been formally evaluated and documented by program leadership.

The rate of pay for the apprenticeship will be $20.00/hour.

Essential Functions
-Successfully completes all required training phase components, including didactic instruction, hands-on skills labs, supervised clinical hours, performance assessments, competency checkpoints, and the required number of independent venipunctures and capillary sticks as defined by the apprenticeship program.
-Performs venipuncture and capillary blood collection under the direct supervision of a qualified educator or department leader, progressively expanding technique and patient population as competency is formally assessed and documented.
-Apply patient identification and specimen labeling procedures under educator oversight, with all steps verified prior to specimen transport during the active training period.
-Learns to recognize adverse patient reactions (e.g., syncope, hematoma, anxiety) and responds according to program protocol under the guidance of supervising clinical or laboratory staff.
-Develops patient communication skills, including procedure explanation and anxiety management, through supervised patient encounters and ongoing educator feedback.
-Handles sharp and biohazardous materials in accordance with regulatory and institutional safety requirements, completing all mandated safety training modules as part of the apprenticeship curriculum.
-Builds working proficiency in laboratory information systems and electronic requisitioning under educator guidance and completes required HIPAA training with application under supervision.
-Performs additional specimen collection procedures (e.g., urine, swabs, EKGs) only upon completion of relevant training modules and formal competency sign-off by a department leader.
-Completes all program requirements in preparation for eligibility to sit for a nationally recognized phlebotomy board examination upon program completion.

No Licenses and Credentials Experience Experience in Healthcare 0-1 year preferred Knowledge, Skills and Abilities - Strong attention to detail, especially in specimen collection, labeling, and documentation. - Ability to learn and perform phlebotomy procedures with accuracy and confidence. - Effective communication skills with a strong customer service/patient-first approach. - Ability to assess and respond to patient needs, including those who may be anxious or at risk for adverse reactions. - Ability to follow standardized protocols, safety procedures, and compliance requirements. - Strong teamwork and collaboration skills across clinical and laboratory settings. - Basic understanding of patient privacy, confidentiality, and infection control.
