Job Summary

Summary<br>Responsible for collecting and processing blood specimens from patients for laboratory testing. Operates with a moderate level of supervision, identifying and resolving common issues independently. Provide effective training and education to new employees and students as assigned.<br><br>Does this position require Patient Care?<br>Yes<br><br>Essential Functions<br>-Obtains quality blood samples using a variety of phlebotomy methods for all age groups. <br>
-Ensures accurate patient identification, quality specimen labeling, processing, handling, and transportation of specimens. <br>
-May assist in the recovery of patients experiencing adverse reactions and provide a rapid response to medical emergencies in the inpatient setting. <br>
-Communicates effectively with patients and patient care teams, explaining procedures and addressing patient concerns to ensure a high level of customer satisfaction. <br>
-Troubleshoots and resolves specimen, order, and common operational issues within the work area. <br>
-Provides some training and education to new staff and students. <br>
-Handles sharps and biohazardous materials in accordance with regulatory requirements to ensure the safety of patients and staff. <br>
-Works fluently with computer programs and systems, and complies with HIPAA regulations. <br>
-Performs other tests, administration, and specimen collection as assigned. <br>

 

Education
High School Diploma or Equivalent required

Licenses and Credentials
Phlebotomy Technician [National Certification] - Generic - HR Only preferred Class D Passenger Vehicle Driver's License [State License] - Generic - HR Only preferred

Experience
Experience in phlebotomy 1-2 years required

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Demonstrates proficiency in proper collection methods and proper processing of all specimens, including correct tube selection, volume, and stability requirements.
- Possesses good written and oral communication skills, the ability to prioritize work, manage time wisely, and adjust to changes in work volumes and projects.
- Superior customer service skills, with the ability to show empathy and respect for patients' privacy and autonomy.
- Demonstrates problem-solving skills and can manage complex patient collections.
- Works independently and collaborates effectively within a team, actively partnering with team members by fostering a collaborative work environment and respecting individuals with varied experiences and perspectives.
