The Surgical Technologist 2 is an integral member of the surgical team, assisting under the supervision of a licensed professional while taking on increased responsibility in patient care. Key duties include maintaining a sterile environment, ensuring equipment functionality, and supporting both invasive and non0invasive procedures to prioritize patient safety. This role requires advanced knowledge in aseptic techniques, human anatomy, and surgical tools, performed in alignment with the mission and values of Tampa General Hospital.

Essential Functions

  • Gather, check, and open supplies and equipment needed for procedure. 
  • Set up sterile instruments, supplies, and medications/solutions. 
  • Assist team members with gowning, gloving, and draping the patient. 
  • Establish the sterile field and secure tubing, cords, and accessories. 
  • Participate in surgical site and patient verification during the time-out procedure. 
  • Prepare and anticipate additional instruments, equipment, and supplies. 
  • Maintain sterile technique and perform necessary counts. 
  • Safe management and handling of specimen. 
  • Prepare sterile dressing. 
  • Maintaining clean instruments for sterilization. 
  • Assist in room cleaning and preparation for next patient. 
  • Assist in patient positioning transfers. 
  • Additional duties as assigned.


Education

  • Technical Program Graduate of Commission on accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) Surgical Technology Program 
  • Or Technical Program Military Surgical Technology Program

Certification

  • Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) from the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting 
  • Or Tech in Surgery (TS-C) from National Center for Competency Testing

Work Experience

  • One (1) year of surgical experience. 
  • Demonstrates technical and procedural competence in at least three (3) surgical specialties.

Technical Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Demonstrates proficiency in performance in the first scrub role for a wide range of surgical procedures. 
  • Demonstrates proficiencies in surgical techniques, instrumentation, and procedures. 
  • Effectively responds to emergency situations in the operating room with sound judgement and precision. 
  • Utilizes critical-thinking skills to anticipate the perioperative needs of the patient and surgical team, ensuring seamless procedural flow. 
  • Collaborates at a higher level with peers and multidisciplinary teams to make informed decisino regarding surgical patient care. 
  • Assists with circulating responsibilities and tasks as needed to support the surgical team. 
  • Must demonstrate proficient knowledge, skills, and abilities of a Certified Surgical Technologist.
