The Department of Public Health’s Tewksbury Hospital is seeking an experienced Respiratory Therapy professional to serve as a Respiratory Therapy Supervisor. Reporting to the Chief Medical Officer, the supervisor will lead Respiratory Therapy Technician I and II staff and play an essential role in staffing, quality improvement, performance management, education, and effective use of departmental resources.
The Respiratory Therapy Supervisor will support staff development, coordinate education and orientation, analyze departmental data, participate in committees and quality initiatives, and help advance safe, effective respiratory care across medical and locked psychiatric units.
Please Note: This is a 40-hour position. Monday through Friday from 7:00 am to 3:30 pm. Days off; Saturday and Sunday
Duties and Responsibilities (these duties are a general summary and not all inclusive):
Plans, organize and supervise the activities of the Respiratory Care Department to ensure compliance with hospital policies and procedures, standard practices of the profession and applicable federal, state and Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO) regulations; plan and direct performance improvement/quality assurance activities of the Respiratory Care Department.
Oversee the scheduling and staffing activities necessary to the operation of the Respiratory Care Department.
Assess the performance of Respiratory Care Technician Level I-II staff and provide feedback on the quality of care that is being provided and to provide an opportunity to gain additional knowledge and skills; evaluate work performance to enhance abilities and provide suggestions for improvement and educate staff on the specific duties and services required and the implementation of such.
Analyze statistical data such as reports on census, acuity, personnel changes, productivity, accidents and attendance in order to recommend action concerning patient census, deployment of personnel and effective use of available resources.
Examine medical and other records relative to utilization reviews to ensure compliance with applicable federal, state, and JCAHO regulations, as well as professional standards of care and practice; inspect physical facilities to ensure compliance with applicable federal, state, and JCAHO regulations.
Coordinate and may provide orientation and in-service education to Respiratory Therapy Technician Level I-II and other nursing and medical staff to obtain and exchange information, to enhance job skills and overall knowledge and to stay abreast of new procedures, techniques and guidelines in the medical field.
Serve as a member of special committees or teams, as necessary to ensure proper use of respiratory care procedures and treatments; stay abreast of respiratory therapy care and healthcare standards and regulations to ensure compliance with regulatory agencies.
Performs related duties as required including duties of staff therapist on the medical and locked psychiatric units.
Required Qualifications:
Ability to communicate effectively with employees, patients and families.
Working knowledge of Respiratory Therapy practices, principles and equipment.
Working knowledge of PAP devices and associated equipment.
Working knowledge of ECG monitoring.
Preferred Qualifications:
Knowledge of the policies, procedures, specifications, standards and guidelines governing assigned unit activities.
Knowledge of the principles of general chemistry, bacteriology and microbiology.
Ability to interpret laboratory test results relative to microbiology.
Ability to motivate patients.
Ability to perform arithmetical computations with speed and accuracy (Addition, subtraction, division, multiplication).

Salary placement is determined by a combination of factors, including the candidate’s years of directly related experience and education, and alignment with our internal compensation structure as set forth by the Human Resources Division’s Hiring Guidelines. For all bargaining unit positions (non-management), compensation is subject to the salary provisions outlined in the applicable collective bargaining agreement and will apply to placement within the appropriate salary range.
