Specialty Laboratory Technologist - Immunogenetics/HLA - Mount Sinai Hospital - Full Time/Evenings (3pm - 11pm incl wknds & hol)

Mount Sinai Health System is seeking a Specialty Laboratory Technologist (Histocompatibility) to join our cutting-edge Histocompatibility and Immunology Laboratory (HLA Lab). This role is crucial in supporting Solid Organ and Bone Marrow Transplant Programs by performing serological and molecular HLA testing to ensure optimal donor-recipient matching.
The ideal candidate is a highly skilled laboratory professional with a strong attention to detail, problem-solving abilities, and commitment to regulatory compliance. This position offers the opportunity to work in a fast-paced, high-volume laboratory that directly impacts patient outcomes.

To assure that the Employee is technically competent, possesses required education and experience as well as other behavioral skills and performs their responsibilities accordingly. To demonstrate that the employees performance is evaluated and appropriate training- in service is provided. To assure that the employee is cognizant of the philosophy, standards, objectives and policies of the Department and the Hospital Center.

Responsibilities

1. Demonstrates the ability to perform clinical/technical/service/administrative tasks.

2. Performs technical procedures in Immunogenetics as outlined in the policy and procedure manual(s).

3. Performs periodic/scheduled and as needed maintenance on instrumentation/equipment. Maintains documentation including remedial action for problems encountered.

4. Performs quality control and calibration procedures when indicated; verifies in laboratory information system; records on Levy-Jennings charts; signs QC logs.

5. Ensures that all required Quality Control and/ or calibration procedures are completed by signing out the records appropriately- per shift/daily/monthly etc., a) All QC are logged in the LIS and indicated on the Charts when needed) Signs all QC Logs.

6. Maintains all records as per the regulatory requirements: card files, patient requisitions, LIS Documentation, statistical data.

7. Consults with the Supervisor or the Pathologist, if needed, on all important results, conflicting or out of range (recognized patterns specified in policy) results. Notes inadequate volume and/ or abnormal appearance of sample

8. Reviews all Critical Test results by repeat analysis if necessary, and communicates the same to Nursing Staff/ Physician every time. Supervisor/Pathologist is always notified in extreme cases. Enters the details of the Critical Value communication in LIS.

9. Prioritizes work activities to meet the established/expected test result turnaround time. Always notifies Supervisor if cannot perform a test or it is delayed.

10. Assists in Inventory Control to assure adequate supplies (QC, reagents, calibrators and other consummables0 are available and reagents are stored properly (temperature sensitive). Supplies are dated appropriately when placed in use.

11. Participates in other projects/duties as assigned by the Supervisor/ Lab Management.

12. Takes initiative in resolving instrument related problems and finding alternate options for test processing.

13. Uses available time to departmental advantage and assists where needed.

14. Demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care, based on physical, psychosocial, educational, safety, and related criteria, appropriate to the age of the patients served in assigned area.

15. May be required to perform other duties as assigned or perform other duties when necessary.

Organizational/Managerial

16. Participates in the departments performance improvement activities.

17. Maintains patient/employee confidentiality in the management of information.

18. Observes the Health Care Systems compliance policies.

19. Participates in Competency and Proficiency testing programs, reports results back to Supervisor.

20. Observes all Safety procedures and precautions: a) Uses Personal Protective Equipment such as Lab Coats, gloves, mask, shield etc., b) Disposes off contaminated waste and samples as specified by the hospital and laboratory manual.

21. Wears hospital ID badge at all times while on premises.

Work Environment & Physical Requirements: 

• Moderate physical activity including standing, bending, lifting (up to 15 lbs.), and typing.
• Exposure to infectious and hazardous materials, including blood, tissues, and chemicals.
• Ability to handle human tissue samples (e.g., spleen, lymph nodes, blood).
• Must comply with biohazard safety protocols and wear personal protective equipment (PPE) as required.
• Availability to work on-call hours and flexible shifts as needed by the department.
• Compliance with hospital policies, regulatory requirements, and laboratory best practices.

HLA Specific Duties include: 

• Perform serological and molecular HLA testing to support solid organ and bone marrow transplantation.
• Conduct tests such as HLA typing (based NGS/RT-PCR), crossmatching, antibody screening, and flow cytometry-based assays.
• Work closely with transplant coordinators, clinicians, and other healthcare professionals to facilitate timely and accurate test reporting.
• Notify the supervisor or clinician of any critical, out-of-range, or conflicting test results.
• Ensure proper storage of temperature-sensitive materials, routinely checking laboratory freezers, refrigerators, incubators, water baths, and heat blocks.
• Adhere to safety protocols for handling biohazardous samples and chemicals.
• Participate in test validation, laboratory research, and development of new testing methodologies.
• Stay current with advancements in histocompatibility testing through continuing education and professional development.
• Contribute to quality improvement projects that enhance lab performance and efficiency.
• Assist in the training and mentorship of new technologists and laboratory personnel.
• Engage in proficiency testing programs to ensure competency and skill enhancement.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree (B.S.) in Medical Technology, Clinical Laboratory Science, Biology, or a related field, meeting NYS Department of Health (DOH) technologist standards.
• 0–1 year of experience in a clinical laboratory setting, preferably in Histocompatibility, Immunology, or Transplantation Laboratory.
• New graduates with strong laboratory skills are encouraged to apply.
• New York State Clinical Laboratory Technologist License (issued by DOH/Office of Professions) or Restricted Technologist License in Histocompatibility required
• Preferred:
  o ASCP certification (American Society for Clinical Pathology).
  o ASHI Certified Histocompatibility Technologist (CHT) or Certified Histocompatibility Specialist (CHS).

Compensation Statement

The Mount Sinai Health System (MSHS) provides salary ranges that comply with the New York City Law on Salary Transparency in Job Advertisements. The salary range for the role is $56.88 - $69.74 Hourly. Actual salaries depend on a variety of factors, including experience, education, and operational need. The salary range or contractual rate listed does not include bonuses/incentive, differential pay or other forms of compensation or benefits.
