Program Overview: This is a great opportunity to kickstart your healthcare career with our Earn as You Learn program! As a student, you will be paid while you learn.

 

Participation Requirements:

  • You must be currently enrolled in an Accredited Surgical Technologist Program
  • PRN – A minimum of 2 shifts per 6 week schedule

Cohort Program Details:

  • Pay - $18/hr
  • Offers - To be made by end of November 2026
  • Start date – Beginning of 4th Semester

Overview

Christian was nationally ranked as “high performing” in the clinical specialty of geriatrics and in the following seven of 21 common procedures and conditions: heart attack, heart failure, kidney failure, diabetes, COPD, pneumonia and stroke. High performing in a specialty means we were in the top 10% nationally of all evaluated hospitals for that specialty or procedure and condition.

Northwest HealthCare, six miles west of Christian, offers 24- hour emergency care, the Sleep Disorders Center and a variety of outpatient diagnostic and imaging services.

 

The Surgical Services Department performs emergency, trauma, elective, in-patient, out-patient, and ambulatory/same day surgery. ASD also does pre-and post-procedure assessment and recovery of special procedures patients, and pre-procedure assessment of cardiac cath lab patients. Specialties include general surgery, orthopedics, GU, GYN, thoracic, ophthalmic, vascular, plastic, neuro, dental, ENT, endoscopic, cardiovascular, and podiatry.


Preferred Qualifications

Role Purpose

Assists mentor with surgical duties for operating room procedures under the direct supervision of a registered nurse and/or surgical technologist.

 

Responsibilities

  • Assists in turning over of room, and ensures supplies, instruments, and equipment are returned to proper location.
  • Assists with preparing operating room for surgical patient, reviews preference cards to determine surgeon needs, obtains the necessary supplies and equipment for the procedure, ensures cleanliness of room and assists with opening of sterile supplies under the supervision of assigned mentor.
  • Assists with surgical scrub duties, and with the collection, identification and disposition of cultures and specimens under supervision of assigned mentor.
  • Participates in educational activities related to extern program including unit specific educational information.
  • BJC has determined this is a safety-sensitive position. The ability to work in a constant state of alertness and in a safe manner is an essential function of this job.
