Performs advanced Obstetric and Gynecology Ultrasound procedures in order to facilitate appropriate diagnosis and treatment of patients. Provides Quality assurance assistance to Supervisor for OB/GYN imaging and preliminary reporting.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

EDUCATION, CERTIFICATION, AND/OR LICENSURE:

1. Registered Diagnostic Medical Sonographer (RDMS) certification through the American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography (ARDMS). 

2. Obstetrics and Gynecology certification through the American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography (ARDMS). 

3. Obtain certification in Basic Life Support within 30 days of hire date. 

EXPERIENCE: 

Five (5) years of experience as an OB Sonographer.  

CORE DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: The statements described here are intended to describe the general nature of work being performed by people assigned to this position.  They are not intended to be constructed as an all-inclusive list of all responsibilities and duties.  Other duties may be assigned.

1.  Plans and performs imaging procedures to produce sonographic medical images for the diagnosis or treatment of patients meeting the equality of standards of the department as identified through professional literature, department protocol, policy and procedure.

2.Demonstrates appropriate level of knowledge and technical aspects of the position, maintaining professional and technical competencies as required by the organization, the accreditation and licensing bodies (where applicable).

3.Reviews the physician’s request completely for information on the procedure to be performed for each patient; refers any questions to the maternal fetal medicine specialist or referring physician before performing the study.

4.Consults with physician immediately regarding significant or abnormal sonography findings.

5.Assists department physicians with invasive procedures requiring use of sonography.

6.Produces images of optimal quality by using the reporting system for image delivery and archiving. This is monitored by observation and concurrent image reviews.

7.Maintains confidentiality of all Protected Health Information.

8.Assesses patients’ needs related to comfort, hygiene and range of motion and provides support accordingly.

9.Educates patients regarding sonographic procedures by explaining the procedure and answering questions accordingly.

10.Display imaging techniques, patient care and guest relation behaviors in accordance with the ARDMS Code of Ethics, WVUH Administrative Policies and Procedures, WVUH Behavior Standards, Radiology Department Policies and Procedures, State and Federal Regulations, and HCAHO guidelines.

11.Providing preliminary reports from the reporting system to the ordering provider.

12.Submits the appropriate biomedical and IT tickets as needed.

13.Promotes the team approach to providing imaging services by positively interacting with the technical, support, nursing, residents and medical staff.

14.Engages in problem solving, crisis management and systems implementation throughout the hospital to promote and support efficient, high-quality, cost-effective patient care.

15.Performs as a clinical instructor meeting the quality of standards of the sonography education program as identified through professional literature, department, institutional and sonography education programs(s) protocol, policy and procedure.

16.Evaluates and documents student clinical performance fairly, consistently and in a timely manner according to guidelines of the educational programs.

17. Maintains professional development in sonographic imaging and techniques.

18.Participates in in-house training and development offerings and applies the resultant skills and knowledge to position performance, monitored by supervision.

19.Supervises, delegates and monitors functions of the ultrasound division including time off requests and closing schedules. Develops a plan for coverage throughout each clinic. Identifies any barriers within the schedules.

20.Assists in completing sonographer image evaluations with the supervisor and the medical director of ultrasound.

21.Monitors that ultrasounds are read within 24 hours of the department’s requirements and report any issues to the Administrator and Chair.

22.Assists in implementing ultrasound at new clinics.

23.Develops ultrasound protocols to ensure consistency at clinical sites.

24.Identifies any equipment needs and provides the information to the supervisor, administrator, and chairperson.

25.Assists with coordinating ultrasound student schedules and resident schedules.

26.Assists with AIUM accreditation and reaccreditation.

27. Coordinates quality assurance for machines in conjunction with AIUM requirements.

28.Assists with providing sonographer continuing education by completing and presenting SDMS Study Groups.

29.Supports the development of  OB/GYN Sonographers by providing feedback regarding performance.

30.Acts as a mentor and is a day-to-day point of contact for level OB/GYN Sonographers.

31.Acts a preceptor by assisting with on-boarding new sonographers with department orientation, in-service, and education."
