MRI Technologist Assistant

POSITION OVERVIEW


Department: Imaging — MRI / CT

Reports To: Director of Clinical Operations

Employment Type: Full-Time

FLSA Status: Non-Exempt

Schedule: Monday – Friday | No Nights, Weekends, or On-Call


POSITION SUMMARY

The MRI Technologist Assistant plays a vital support role within the Imaging Department at the Orthopedic Center of Illinois. Working under the direct supervision of a licensed MRI Technologist, the MRI Tech Assistant is responsible for facilitating efficient patient flow, preparing patients and exam rooms, and providing hands-on clinical support to ensure a smooth, safe, and positive imaging experience. The ideal candidate is organized, compassionate, detail-oriented, and thrives in a fast-paced clinical environment.


ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

Patient Preparation & Flow

  • Greet and escort patients to the MRI suite in a welcoming, professional, and compassionate manner.
  • Conduct and document the MRI safety screening process, reviewing contraindication questionnaires with patients and flagging any concerns to the supervising technologist prior to imaging.
  • Verify patient identity and confirm the correct exam has been ordered prior to bringing the patient into the MRI room.
  • Assist patients with gowning, lockers, and removal of metal objects and implanted devices as directed by the technologist.
  • Explain the MRI procedure to patients in clear, reassuring terms to minimize anxiety and ensure patient cooperation during the scan.
  • Assist patients with mobility needs, including transferring to and from the MRI table safely and with appropriate technique.
  • Monitor patients for comfort and safety in the waiting area and throughout the pre-scan preparation process.

MRI Suite Support

  • Prepare and set up the MRI exam room between patients, including positioning coils, padding, and accessories as directed by the technologist.
  • Remove and return MRI-compatible coils and positioning aids in accordance with technologist instructions and equipment protocols.
  • Ensure the MRI suite is clean, stocked, and ready for the next patient following each exam.
  • Assist the technologist with patient positioning on the MRI table as directed — the technologist retains full responsibility for clinical positioning decisions.
  • Retrieve and return patients before and after scans, maintaining efficient patient throughput throughout the day.

CT Support

  • Assist the CT technologist with patient preparation, escort, and rooming for CT studies as needed.
  • Support the CT tech with room turnover and supply stocking between exams.
  • Screen CT patients for contrast allergies and relevant medical history as directed, escalating any concerns to the supervising technologist.

Administrative & Documentation Support

  • Verify and confirm patient orders and referrals are accurate and complete prior to imaging.
  • Update patient location and status in the scheduling and EHR system throughout the day.
  • Assist with scheduling coordination and communicating appointment reminders or instructions to patients as needed.
  • Maintain accurate documentation of patient safety screenings and interactions in the electronic health record.

Safety & Compliance

  • Adhere strictly to all MRI safety protocols at all times, including the absolute prohibition on bringing any ferromagnetic materials into Zone III or Zone IV of the MRI suite.
  • Complete and maintain current MRI safety training and annual competency requirements.
  • Follow all HIPAA regulations, infection control protocols, and OCI policies in every patient and staff interaction.
  • Report any patient safety concerns, equipment issues, or adverse observations to the supervising technologist immediately.
  • Maintain patient privacy and dignity throughout all interactions and procedures.

Team Collaboration

  • Work closely and cooperatively with the technologists to maximize imaging suite efficiency and patient satisfaction.
  • Communicate proactively with front desk, nursing, and clinical staff regarding patient flow and scheduling.
  • Support cross-departmental needs during high-volume days and contribute positively to the team environment.


REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills with a demonstrated ability to work compassionately with patients of all ages and abilities.
  • Ability to work efficiently in a fast-paced, high-volume imaging environment.
  • Basic proficiency with computers and electronic health record systems.
  • Must be able to stand for extended periods and assist with patient transfers and mobility.
  • Must complete OCI MRI Safety Training prior to entering the MRI suite independently.


PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Prior experience in an imaging, radiology, or orthopedic clinical setting.
  • Familiarity with MRI safety screening principles and contraindication protocols.
  • Certified Medical Assistant (CMA/RMA), CNA, or similar clinical credential.


PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

This position requires frequent standing, walking, bending, and assisting patients with transfers and mobility. Must be able to lift up to 30 pounds and assist patients who require physical support. This role involves working in proximity to MRI magnetic fields and requires strict adherence to all MRI safety screening requirements — including pre-employment screening for personal implants or devices that may be contraindicated in an MRI environment.
