Education

• High School Graduate or Equivalent

Experience / Qualifications

• BLS certification through the American Heart Association for Healthcare Providers.
• Holds recognized national certification certificate, (i.e., ASPT, ASCP). Preferred
• Previous phlebotomy experience preferred
• Special Skills Precise hand-to-eye coordination and finger dexterity is necessary to perform procedures, obtain specimens, and use electronic/computerized equipment. 
• Demonstrated proficiency in venipuncture   
• Excellent communication, interpersonal skills, and attention to detail  
• Ability to self-direct and exercise independent judgment in situations requiring follow-up and discussions with clinical staff and/or other areas to ensure completeness of task and customer satisfaction.
• Works well in a team environment to accomplish common tasks to solve problems, and enhance the smooth and efficient flow of the department.

Position Summary

The Phlebotomist Accurately and efficiently performs specimen collections and testing as defined by laboratory policy and procedure manuals. 

• Greets patient and verifies patient identity.
• Prepares patient for drawing blood, explaining the blood draw procedure to the patient, answering any questions about the process, and easing patient concerns. 
• Assesses the environment to assure patient safety and determines appropriate equipment to use that meets the patient’s needs.
• Gathers medical testing materials, including needles, sample vials, etc, as needed
• Accurately label, prepare, and handle all collected specimens per policy and infection control guidelines
• Perform accurate and timely data entry into the system of patient information and specimen
• Organizes workflow to improve efficiency. 
• Decontaminates equipment and work area to ensure a clean environment. 
• Performs other duties as assigned.

Physical Requirements

This job can be physically demanding at times requiring stooping, sitting, standing, and walking for long periods of time. Must be able to work in a stressful environment, detail oriented, alert, and self-motivated. Ability to push/pull up to 40lbs, carry and lift up to 50lbs.

  • Annual Joint Commission mandatory education requirements, in-service and health requirements including attendance at new employee orientation.
