Medical Assistant/PSR

Position Summary

Provides combined clinical and patient access support for a primary care clinic in San Francisco. Serves as an initial point of contact for patients, families, and community-based physicians while supporting providers within the Medical Assistant scope of practice. Delivers responsive service and helps maintain safe, efficient clinic operations in a collaborative environment.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

• Welcome and register patients; complete check-in and check-out; update demographic and insurance information; collect copayments; and process required forms.
• Answer calls professionally, identify patient needs, route messages, monitor voicemail, and return calls within established department timeframes.
• Schedule and confirm appointments, monitor clinician capacity, fill available appointments, and communicate schedule changes or delays.
• Prepare patients and exam rooms for visits and provide routine clinical assistance to physicians within the Medical Assistant scope of practice.
• Use Epic to document and communicate appointment and patient information accurately and maintain current electronic records.
• Process incoming laboratory results, faxes, and other records and scan documents into the patient chart as directed.
• Assist patients with insurance, payment, authorization, MyChart, and routine billing questions; escalate complex concerns appropriately.
• Support physician and practitioner needs and keep supervisors and team members informed of critical patient, service, or workflow concerns.
• Maintain current knowledge of practice physicians and services and provide clear, courteous information to patients and families.
• Maintain office supplies, equipment, and general office systems and participate in staff meetings and clinic activities.
• Protect patient confidentiality, follow HIPAA and UBCP standards, uphold professional conduct, and perform other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

• Knowledge of routine Medical Assistant procedures, patient registration, scheduling, insurance verification, and front-office practices.
• Proficiency using Epic or another electronic health record, Microsoft Outlook, Microsoft Office, and standard office equipment.
• Strong customer service, interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills.
• Ability to communicate clearly and respectfully with patients, families, physicians, coworkers, and community partners.
• Ability to prioritize multiple tasks, maintain composure, and respond effectively in a fast-paced clinic environment.
• Ability to maintain accurate patient information, recognize issues requiring escalation, and follow through promptly.
• Commitment to patient-centered service, teamwork, confidentiality, cultural sensitivity, and respectful workplace behavior.
• Ability to follow UBCP policies, applicable laws, safety requirements, and standards of professional conduct.

Education and Certification

• High school diploma or equivalent required.
• Graduate of an approved Medical Assistant program that includes injectable medication training.
• Certified Medical Assistant required or CCMA certification must be obtained within 90 days of hire.
• Current CPR/BLS certification required.

Typical Experience

• Experience providing patient-facing customer service in a medical office, primary care clinic, or other ambulatory healthcare setting preferred.
• Experience performing both Medical Assistant and patient access or front-office responsibilities preferred.

Pay Range: $33.00 - $36.00 per hour
